Only 363 Days Until Christmas!

by Peter Jenkins

Start by reading…Zechariah 10:1 - 11:17Revelation 18:1-24Psalm 146:1-10Proverbs 30:33

The adverts shown in the lead-up to Christmas promised greater happiness if only we could have their products in time for the big day. They subtly encouraged us not to worry about paying for them as we could have it all on credit and pay the bill next year. But after all the presents have been opened (we must of course be thankful) and the excitement has died down, are we really any happier?

January is regarded as the worst month of the year when it comes to depression, and it is not hard to realise why. Revelation 18 provides a picture of what happens when a country sets its focus on material things. Babylon pursued riches and worldly happiness, and in a moment, its empire was gone. This chapter stands as a stark warning to Christians to guard their hearts and minds against the false promises of this world.

As Christians we are called to set our eyes on things that are of God so we can build up treasure that cannot be stolen. The joy we receive from serving God cannot be lost in a day, as it is eternal. The easiest way to know the truth of our hearts is to look at the treasures we pursue and the things that really make us happy. Remember that there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner that repents!

If your happiness is in a box or a bottle it will soon be over. If it is in a baby born in a manger who came to die on a cross you still have the best gift to look forward to.

Pause and reflect: The things you value most will determine the way you pursue happiness. Make sure you are not disappointed by the value of your Christmas goodies today!
