God Looks for Humility
The old saying, “pride comes before a fall”, is based on Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” and Proverbs 29:23: “A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honour.”
Of course, there is a vast difference in taking pride over a task and an arrogance in attitude over who we are. Indeed, this was Satan’s attitude when he fell out of God’s favour. God said to him:
“Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground…” (Ezekiel 28:17).
What a warning about how our attitude should be in all aspects of life! The sort of people God wants us to be is summed up in Isaiah 66:2:
“…‘But on this one will I look: on him who is poor [humble] and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.’”
Proverbs 3:34 says that He “…gives grace to the humble”, and in Isaiah 57:15 to dwell with “him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones”.
If we want our prayers to be heard it is worth learning from what God said in Daniel 10:12: “…‘Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.’”
Pause and reflect: Remember 2 Chronicles 7:14, which says:
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
