You Were Called to This!

by Terry Leaman

Start by reading…Daniel 1:1 - 2:231 Peter 3:8 - 4:6Psalm 119:65-80Proverbs 28:14

The words in 1 Peter 3 echo those of Jesus in Matthew 5:38-44 when He was speaking to His disciples:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’… But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

God’s heart stays in your consciousness once you connect with it. Peter’s heart was moved into new realms on hearing the Saviour minister love to him and the other disciples. In 1 Peter 3:8-9 we read: “Finally, all of you be of one mind [united], having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.”

We were called to blessing, not cursing, putting people down or bringing accusation. Accusing the brethren is Satan’s modus operandi. We have been called out from the rest of the world; called to be a people of blessing.

We may have thought our calling was to say it as is is, to set the record straight, to call everyone out for what they are doing. But having heard Jesus teach, and having seen the woman taken in adultery and Jesus’ reaction to her and others like her, Peter says that we should not be “returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing”.

Peter was there. He heard the Master teach. He saw the effect it had on people, and he saw the dramatic changes it made. We were called to bless and inherit blessing.

Pause and reflect: “Father, it’s your heart I want, and none other. Amen.”
