Are We Watching for the Day Approaching?

by Alan Jefferies

Start by reading…Ezekiel 23:1-49Hebrews 10:18-39Psalm 109:1-31Proverbs 27:13

Today’s reading from Hebrews gives us both encouragement and a sharp warning. Hebrews 10:24-25 says:

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

This is interesting because the key to what is written is found in the reference to the “Day approaching”. The challenge is to live in the light of Jesus’ return. Some people had obviously decided they no longer needed to meet together, but the writer makes it clear that we need to do so, especially as we await His return.

This is a sobering challenge. What part does the return of Jesus play in our desire to gather together? We are often so consumed by the plans and purposes God has for our lives that we forget the plans and purpose of Jesus. One day He will return to this earth. He is not just building a Church but preparing a bride; and the way we treat the Church reflects how we treat Jesus’ preparations for His bride.

If we are truly mindful of Jesus’ return we will look for a way today to make the bride more beautiful. Every time you sow something into His Church you are sowing into His bride. Every good deed, every kind word and every generous action contributes to making the bride of Christ more beautiful.

Pause and reflect: “Jesus, we thank You that You are returning, and that You are returning for the Church, Your bride. Thank You that You have chosen us to share in that wonderful event. Help us to play our part in reaching the lost and preparing the bride as the day approaches. Amen.”
